The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has released its latest Cities Economic Impact Report, which includes an analysis of key metrics in 82 cities across the globe, such as their contribution to GDP, employment, and traveler spending. According to the report, Orlando is predicted to be the largest U.S. travel and tourism city destination in 2022, with an economic contribution of over $31 billion. This represents 20% of the city's total GDP and a $2.7 billion recovery above 2019 levels.
Las Vegas was identified as the second-largest travel and tourism market in the U.S., with a direct GDP contribution of $23 billion in 2021, surpassing the 2019 baseline by 5.3%. Other cities that made the top U.S. rankings for 2022 include Miami, Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Honolulu, with strong signs of closing the gap to 2019 levels.
Despite strong domestic traveler spending in major U.S. city destinations, the slower-than-expected return of international traveler spending continued to create pressure and drive a performance gap in the overall economic recovery of many city destinations last year. However, the Travel & Tourism sector showed positive trends for employment growth, with many cities seeing a rise in jobs filled. By fostering collaboration between the private and public sectors, the industry can continue to meet and exceed record economic development.
